Overheard at the video store

Pompous hipster dude in Utilikilt: I was inquiring about his experience in a relationship that was, um, similar, and his experience in a relationship that was similar was extremely successful.

Girlfriend: Except how they got divorced.

If only we lived in New York, I would send it in.

I have to say, even in Madison, I have never actually seen a man wear a utilikilt. A sarong, yes. Not an expensive kilt. Are our hipsters just poorer?

I thought the man-skirt was just a fade that was here and gone in a matter of months!! See what I know

Guess that's what happens when small town pressure gets to you!

The Utilikilt company world headquarters are actually in my neighborhood, so it stands to reason more people would be wearing them here. But yeah, even getting out as little as I do, I see guys wearing them on a not-uncommon basis.

It occurs to me that if we lived in New York, the dude probably wouldn't have been wearing a Utilikilt, which would make the story lose something somehow.

so okay this was a conversation you heard while you were in the facility in your neighborhood? and not a bit of online dialogue?

Most excellent! Of course their divorce is fairly successful.

I'm burning to know what the "um, similar" meant. I bet it means poly and the dude was trying to persuade his girlfriend...

Hah! That could be it, Liz. Though I'm not sure-- he may not have actually said "um," but jut paused pompously before saying "similar". I was trying to capture his ponderous speaking style, which was really noticeable.

And Kate--this actually was a conversation that took place behind me in line at the video store. It's just about the only chance I have to overhear anything. I have really got to get out more.

Okay. An actual (though maybe brief) post. Soon!

Utilikilts aren't inknown in Washington, DC or in it's Virginia suburbs.

Cheers,

GF
